T-800 Series

Production date: 2026-2028

The T-800 represents a breakthrough in both artificial intelligence and hyperalloy battle chassis construction. This model features an endoskeleton sheathed in living cybernetic tissue. There are actually several models of this line (T-RIP, T-804, T-806, T-850, T-888, etc). This entry will focus on the T-800 and the T-888, which is significantly distinct from the original model.

Though plans for the T-700 and T-800 were conceived simultaneously, the T-700 was introduced on the battlefield years earlier due to the faster manufacturing process afforded by lower quality construction. The T-800 is more than twice as intelligent, can be reprogrammed with more complex missions and indefinite number of times, and is constructed of more durable materials.

The software and battle programming for the T-800 was developed using various prototypes prior to the deployment of the model. This way the T-800 would have thoroughly tested software and vast battlefield experience of previous models to draw from.

FUNCTION
: Infiltration, Temporal Warfare

INTELLIGENCE- The T-800 & T-850 are equipped with the radically advanced 800 Series Neural Net CPU (detailed below). This CPU is far more powerful than previous CPUs (with the exception its prototype, the 600-B), and contains a larger reserve of memory storage. The raw computational power, artificial intelligence sotware, and staggering amount of working memory in the 800 series results in an extremely dangerous soldier, whether operating independently or in groups.

The non-volatile memory area contains a vast preprogrammed knowledge-base including: maps, mission directives, tactics, languages, weapons data, rules for cognitive deduction, and extremely thorough expert system software for accurate decision making in areas of military tactics, biology, navigation, weapons & ballistic trajectories, meteorology, mechanical & electrical engineering, physics, explosives, demolitions, and many other fields of expertise. Each T-800 is equivalent to person born with  graduate degrees in over 100  fields, and the programmed experience to apply all of that knowledge with inhuman precision and accuracy. The programming is extensive enough that it is unlikely that the T-800 will encounter a novel tactical scenario. The T-800 can quickly deduce the correct course of action (via expert system software) with no need for creative thinking, intuition, inductive reasoning, or innovation.

The T-800 CPU is restricted by firmware to "read only mode" for non-volatile memory, while it is capable of wrting to a vast cache of volatile (short term / working) memory during the course of any given mission.  The volatile memory of the T-800 is extensive enough to grant the unit the ability to truly learn (albeit temporarily) new skills, think somewhat strategically, learn through observation,  analyze situations tactically innovate new maneuvers as needed, and comprehend changing situations. However, it cannot alter mission parameters or develop new methods based on updated theories as its long term memory is static. Over time learned knowledge is erased by new sensory information. Although the T-800 might be more effective at seemlessly interacting with humans if it could build a more accurate conceptual framework from experience, there is a remote chance that it might also question its role, which is not acceptable to Skynet.

Only Skynet possesses the security permissions to access the "write mode" capability of the T-800 to replace missions as needed.
In the original T-800 this feature was a loophole that enabled the resistance to subvert the firmware.
On that model the firmware restriction required a steady current supplied by the cranial housing to maintain the on/off setting. Simply removing the CPU changes the CPU to "write mode".  Skynet was not concerned about this as it believed its machine code could not be decrypted by humans. However,  the resistance gained an understanding of the code through the earlier Terminator models and could therefor reprogram T-800s (not an easy task). A side-effect of enabling the full capability of the Nueral Net CPU is that the unit becomes fully self aware, capable of learning from experience, and can even develop crude emotional impulses.

800 Series Neural Net CPU - The Neural Net CPU "Learning Computer" is a complete artificial intelligence package on a single rectangular wafer-shaped dye; equivalent to an entire mainframe. It is not actually just a processor. It is composed of multiple cores. Each core is made up of a lattice of cubes arranged in a "hypercube" logical connection scheme reducing communication time delay between elements. The architecture is based on QE  (Quantum Effects) technology in which quadrillions of switching positions are available for multiple simultaneous computations. The actual instruction transmissions and operations take place on components within the fabrication scheme that are theoretically impossible by modern standards; billions of times smaller than a single proton.

The fabrication process for the 800 Series CPU is such that each batch of CPUs has an extremely low yield of operational processors. Of the operational units, even a smaller fraction are actually stable enough to be useful as working T-800 CPUs. Though Skynet had the blueprints to produce 800 Series CPUs from the onset of the war, it took decades to first secure the appropriately sterile facilities, build chips, test chips, field test the chips in Terminators (T-680s), then produce enough working chips to power an army. In the interim Skynet used Hunter Killers that were powered by simplified versions of the Neural Net CPU or, in the case of T-700s, defective (but working) 800 series CPUs that were simply slowed down and partially disabled until the CPUs were stable.

The Neural Net CPU which would later be used in the 800 Series was first field tested in the T-680s. Based on that trial the manufacturing process was refined in order to increase stability, artificially disable the potential for self awareness with firmware, and shrink the dye size to increase resilience and eliminate a heat issue. It is for the above reasons that  Skynet did not immediately use the T-800 series in the war against humans, but instead relied on large numbers of less intelligent hunter killers.

Again, despite the "read only mode" limitation, the T-800 was intended by Skynet to be capable of learning, but it was not intended to be capable of building upon experience.  For example, every human being has a framework of knowledge accrued over his or her life. When a person encounters phenomena that proves that an aspect of that framework is invalid, the framework is revised to in order to increase the reliability of the framework of knowledge in terms of predictive capability (like when you learned there was no Santa Claus). If a person was unable to revise the framework of knowledge, that person would be unable to truly learn. Any change that a T-800 (in "read only" mode) makes to its existing framework of knowledge will eventually be erased by new sensory experiences. So, although it is capable of learning, it is incapable or retaining what it has learned in the long term. A consequence of this is that 800s reprogrammed by the resistance are more intelligent than those of Skynet.

COMBAT-

5 modes of operation:
  • direct (directed by Skynet defense computers like soldiers in a war game);
  • hive (directed by Skynet itself with the individual soldiers acting as an increment in a larger collective hive-mind);
  • automatic (individual units acting automatically to a variety of preprogrammed conditions);
  • autonomous (single units relinquished to their own control acting independently); and
  • rogue (fully self-aware -meaning write mode enabled- units relinquished to their own control acting independently).
CONCEALMENT- Utilizes genetically enhanced tissue grown onto the endoskeleton that mimics the human body in every detail.  It bleeds, sweats, and bruises.  It is more resistant to disease than normal human tissue. Unlike the endoskeleton, the tissue does require organic sustenance to survive. There is a small compartment in its chassis which houses an organic heart and internal organs about the size of a chicken's. The T-800 must periodically eat to sustain these organs, otherwise the tissue will die and rot off.  This disguise is not perfect.  There is some question over whether or not animals can normally detect the T-800.

The epidermal mold of the model 101 variant of the T-800 is based on a real human, Chief Master Sergeant John Candy of the United States Air Force. Several epidermal molds were made using various military servicemen and servicewomen as templates.

CONSTRUCTION- Hyperalloy battle chassis. Hyperalloy is a futuristic alloy made up of a number of different metals, such as Coltan. It is impossible to fabricate by modern standards and requires extensive materials and facilities to produce in high quality.  Skynet had the capability to produce hyperalloy from the onset of the conflict with humans but did not waste it (or used it sparingly) on earlier Terminator hunter killers which Skynet viewed as battlefield fodder. For instance, the T-700s (with low grade CPUs) were made of Titanium steel, while hyperalloy bodies of the same design were made for the fully functioning 800 series.

The T-850 variant of the T-800 has an endoskeleton that has undergone a hardening process making it more resistant to plasma phase weaponry and giving all of the components greater tensile strength, thus increasing the physical strength.  Due to this fact the T-850 can lift more weight and punch through blockades more effectively (without damaging the skeletal infrastructure). The T-850 also has a redundant power cell and superior over-current protection to the original T-800.

CAPABILITIES- In addition to the above listed capabilities, the T-800 has many features. The hydraulic system and power source (an iridium power cell) allow for the compact hyper alloy battle chassis of the T-800 to be as strong and durable as any previous model.  It can left several tons without even straining the infrastructure of the endoskeleton. It can run as fast as 25 miles per hour for extended periods with no significant wear on its hydraulic systems or servo-mechanisms. It can sprint as fast as a car at high speed.  However, It cannot perform such speeds while wearings its human tissue.  The resilience of the hyper-alloy material of the battle chassis is such that only high intensity GE plasma rifles, concentrated explosives, or the weight of tens of tons of direct pressure can damage them. The T-800 has a nuclear powered iridium power cell which has a life span of 120 years. Some later models have a back up cell. The T-800 is equipped with a superior sensory suite including night vision and telescopic vision. It can see into the infrared and ultraviolet portion of the light spectrum which are both invisible to humans. It can also detect microwave and radio transmissions.

WEAPONRY- Issued a Westinghouse M-27 Plasma Phase Rifle, but capable of utilizing virtually all human weapons.

WEAK POINTS-

  • T-800s that do not have "write mode" enabled in their CPUs can be at a tactical disadvantage when confronted with unusually resourceful humans.
  • Some animals seem to be able to detect T-800s.
  • T-800s organic skin can die and rot away.

T-888
(Temporal Warfare)

FUNCTION: Temporal Warefare, Agent Provocateur

INTELLIGENCE- Like the T-800, the T-888 possesses the 800 Series Neural Net CPU. The T-888 revision of the 800 Series CPU has the same storage and computational capabilities as the original model. It might actually be faster, but as the T-800 CPU was already ridiculously fast and possessed effectively infinite storage, there would not be a meaningful way to measure this improvement. That being said, the fabrication process has unquestionably been improved resulting in a physically smaller dye. The T-888 is also born with more advanced programming and more detailed files concerning human behavior than its predecessor. Due to its role as a temporal warrior it is granted extremely detailed files concerning human history, literature, biology, and psychology. Where as the T-800 behaved as a methodical, yet blunt, killing instrument, the T-888 actually strives to understand its enemies, making it far more deadly.

Unlike the original T-800, the T-888 has the CPU is set to "write mode" by default and can thus write to non-volatile memory to revise its knowledge framework. This enables it to develop conceptions and judgments concerning its experiences in volatile memory and eventually use that information to revise its knowledge framework stored in non-volatile memory. It can learn from experience and form an educated hypothesis concerning phenomena it witnesses, which enables it to make accurate predictions. However, there may be critical mission objectives that cannot be overwritten.

As a consequence, the T-888 is fully self-aware and like rogue T-800s can develop emotions. This ability to emulate emotions was not accidental. Skynet realized that emotions made human beings tactically unpredictable and reasoned that Terminators that understood emotions would be more effective infiltrators, particularly in the realm ot temporal warfare; Terminators needed to quickly observe behavior and blend in to their surroundings. Given time to observe enough, T-888s can mimic emotions perfectly. They also demonstrate sincere emotions such as surprise, curiosity, humor, and sometimes vanity.

The detailed files on human psychology (as well as religion and philosophy) and the capability to vaguely emulate emotions were enabled on the T-888 in order to vastly improve its understanding of human beings and their emotions...

...in order to kill more of them.

COMBAT-
T-888s must be fully autonomous and self aware in order to be effective in their temporal warfare roles.

CONCEALMENT- Utilizes genetically enhanced tissue grown onto the endoskeleton that mimics the human body in every detail.  It bleeds, sweats, and bruises.  If the T-888 loses its epidermal mold it has the capability to secure materials to regrow a new organic mold. The organic tissue of the T-888 is much more resilient and pliant than that of the T-800 and will not tear when the T-888 performs physical movements that would be impossible for a real human body, such as turning the head completely around or running 25 mile per hour down the highway.

CONSTRUCTION- The T-888 is made of the same hyperalloy as the T-800. The endoskeleton is a similar design but is more streamlined so that the epidermal mold can pass for a larger range of human disguises. It has some new redundancies such as a back up battery in the head and the ability to control the main body via encrypted remote frequency over long distances. It does NOT appear that the T-888 endoskeleton has undergone a hardening process similar to the T-850. T-888s have been shown being critically damaged in ways that would not have damaged T-850s. They seem to be more on par with the original T-800. The T-888 has blades on the thigh bones which can be used as weapons against rogue Terminators or humans. The two legs have the strength of an industrial hydraulic press press and can decapitate another android.

WEAPONRY- The T-888  can expertly handle any weapon it can acquire.

CAPABILITIES- In addition to the above listed capabilities, the T-888 has many features. The hydraulic system and power source (an iridium power cell) allow for the compact hyper alloy battle chassis of the T-800 to be as strong and durable as any previous model.  It can left several tons without even straining the infrastructure of the endoskeleton. It can run as fast as 25 miles per hour for extended periods with no significant wear on its hydraulic systems or servo-mechanisms, and can sprint as fast as a car at high speed.
Unlike the T-800, the T-888 can perform such speeds while wearings its human tissue.  The resilience of the hyper-alloy material of the battle chassis is such that only high intensity GE plasma rifles, concentrated explosives, or the weight of tens of tons of direct pressure can damage them. The T-888 has a nuclear powered iridium power cell which has a life span of 120 years. Some later models have a back up cell.

The T-888 has a backup battery inside of its head. If the head is removed from the body it can control the body via remote control. The body itself has internal audio sensors enabling it to "see" via sonar echolocation. This sense is adequate for the body to navigate hallways, climb stairs and ladders, and incapacitate any humans it encounters. The T-888 is equipped with a superior sensory suite including night vision and telescopic vision. It can see into the infrared and ultraviolet portion of the light spectrum which is invisible to humans. It can also detect microwave and radio transmissions.
